Nebraska Wins Girls’ Four-State Matches

Matches Concluded Thursday at Colbert Hills Golf Course in Kansas

MANHATTAN, KS (July 1, 2021) – Team Nebraska swept singles matches on Thursday to come from behind to win the 53rd Girls Four-State Matches at Colbert Hills Golf Course in Manhattan, Kansas.

Nebraska started the day a half of a point behind Missouri, after earning four points during the first day of matches. Nebraska won all six singles matches to finish with 10 points, ahead of Missouri in second at seven points. Iowa finished third with four points, and Kansas fourth with three points.

On the first day, Nebraska earned two points in the Foursomes matches. It only took three birdies for Lincoln's Nicole Kolbas and Omaha's Kaitlyn Hanna to take care of business against Missouri winning 5 and 3. Elkhorn's Emily Karmazin and Omaha's Katie Ruge fought for the second point, pulling out a close one against Kansas, 2 and 1.

The afternoon Four-Ball matches also earned Team Nebraska two more points with Hanna and Ruge winning 1 up over Iowa, after firing a 33 (-3) on the back nine. Kolbas and Wahoo's Lauren Thiele finished their match much earlier, winning 5 and 4 against Kansas. Kolbas and Thiele won the four-hole stretch from Nos. 11 to 14 to close out their match on the 14th green.

Team Nebraska came out strong for Thursday's singles matches, and did not look back, winning all six. Papillion's Sydney Taake won her match, 5 and 4, with a chip-in for birdie on the 14th hole to close out the match. Thiele also won 5 and 4 to help propel Team Nebraska to victory. Kolbas closed out her match 3 and 2, while Karmazin and Ruge each finished with 2-and-1 victories. Hanna was the only one to go to the 18th hole, winning her match 1 up.

The team was captained by Lincoln's Stephanie Kolbas, with Snyder's Hannah Hunke serving as her assistant. It's the second time in three years that Nebraska has won the matches.
