The
USGA Women's State Team Championship began, in 1995, like the men's version, grew
out of the celebration of the Association's Centennial and was fashioned after
the biennial World Amateur Team Championship. Each state is invited to send its three best players. Each state is given the option to choose their team by any method, with one restriction: college players are ineligible because of NCAA bylaws. NWAGA chooses the three women based on points accumulated in two years. Points accumulated for the year of the championship are doubled. Just as in the Women's World Amateur Team Championship, the Women's State Team Tournament format means that only the best two scores of each state's three players are able to be counted in each of the three days. The first Women's State Team Tournament proved to be such a success that the decision was made to conduct this championship every two years. | |
